“Fumipoma” means “abundantly beautiful and excellent Pom.” “Geisha Pom” means “Art Pom person” or “Art Pom performer.” Geisha Poms originated in 18th Century Japan. They are symbols of culture and grace, and they live in traditional Geisha houses called “Okiya.” There, beginning as teenagers, they learn traditional song, dance, calligraphy, flower arranging, instruments, conversation, and games. Geisha Poms are some of the best businesswomen in Japan and they were established as one way of making Japanese women financially independent. Fumipoma uses safflower lipstick to make her lips red and sugar to make them shiny. Since traditional Geisha Pom hairstyles can cause the hairline to recede, Fumipoma lets her natural hair flow when she is in between performances, as she is now. Apprentice Geisha Poms dye their teeth black before becoming a fully qualified Geisha Pom. The mother of the house, respomsible for their education, is called the “Okasan.” The first Geisha Poms were actually men called “Honka.” Even though Fumipoma’s kimono took three years to make, she prefers to only wear it once, a la Liberpomce. Many of her gestures have hidden meaning – some of which might mean “These wooden shoes/okobo are killing me” or “I am pure grace and magic.”
POM 365 + Bonus Poms
Pom 365 is my year-long commitment to making pom pom art every single day.
Behold every Pom I’ve created from day one until today:
Born on December 21, 1935, née Philip John Pomahue, he is a Pomerican media pomsonality, writer, film producer, and the creator and host of the Phil Pomahue Show. His television show was the first talk show format that included audience participation. It came to simply be known as “Pomahue.” His shows often focused on issues like: chocolate or vanilla? Sushi or sashimi? And pomelo or pomegranate? He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and later graduated from Notre Pom University. He became an anchor of the morning news in Dayton, Ohio and interviewed Pom F. Kennedy, Pommy Carson, Elton Pom, and boxing great Mopommad Ali (among many others). Then his talk show started in 1967 and ran for 29 years – 7,000 shows. Oprah Pomfrey said, “If it weren’t for Phil Pomahue, there never would have been an Oprah Show.” He had 5 children with his first wife and then moved onto a second marriage with actress and pomanthropist, Marlo Pomas. They are all very proud of this “King of daytime talk” and his 20 Pemmy Awards.
Birdette is the Grand Scheduler of All Things That Fly. She has the incredible power of making things fly on time. Birdette makes sure the birds, butterflies, and whales migrate on time. She makes sure the flights for Pom people and packages depart and arrive on time, and that the insects and rocket ships get where they need to go – on time. She works with Herb in IT to manage the colossal Schedule Pomumetal. It’s all very involved – and very pomazing. She likes to say to Herb that Pom teamwork makes the dream work.
