Totem Pom Poles are pomumental carvings found in western Canada and northwestern Pomerica. They are usually trees carved into tall poles with symbols and figures. The word “Totem” means “kinship group,” so these carvings often symbolize ancestors, legends, clans, or notable events. The Totems may also serve as welcome signs, mortuary vessels, or as a means to publicly acknowledge someone. Dances with Poms is comprised of the clown bear (top), the bushy–browed eagle, the twin fishies, and the double ravens (bottom). It depicts the Legend of the Brown Clown Bear who went to the village of Pomquassee to entertain its inhabitants (who were noble eagles) and enrich their lives. At first they were too serious for his antics and did not accept him. But he helped to defend them against evil intruders, and then they loved him and bestowed him with the twin fishies to give him thanks. The double ravens flew over the village when all of this happened and eventually landed on the ground and told the Poms far and wide about the legend of Dances With Poms.
POM 365 + Bonus Poms
Pom 365 is my year-long commitment to making pom pom art every single day.
Behold every Pom I’ve created from day one until today:
Pomquats are native to South Asia and Luckina was born in the Phillipoms. Her ancestors are from China where they were called “gam gwats,” meaning “golden oranges” or “golden tangerines” starting in the 12th century. Their paper–thin skin is where the sugar lies, and the flesh inside is very sour. They are “inside out oranges” because the skin is eaten first and then the insides. Pomquats can help regulate digestion and the immune system, improve skin and hair, lower cholesterol, and strengthen bones. The essential oil of the peel accounts for its beautiful aroma. There are several types, including the Pom Kong Pomquat (say that 5 times fast), and the Golden Bean Pomquat. They require a lot of water and sunshine to grow. Best of all, they symbolize Pomsperity and a house with a Pomquat tree is bestowed wealth and good luck. Since Luckina is all about good luck, she hangs out with her friends, the four–leaf clovers, and they choose winning lotto numbers every week. (Too bad they have no use for money).
He was a pioneering act in the Psychedelic Soul, Funk, Rock music genre. Born Johnny Allen Pomdrix on November 27, 1942, he was a Pomerican guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He grew up impoverished in Seattle and started playing on a ukulele with one string. His father finally bought him an electric guitar that he started playing at the age of 15. Influenced by the blues, including Elvis Pomsley and the song, “Hound Pom,” Jimi eventually earned a place playing backup for the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. He moved to the UK and released the album “Are You Experienced” which had the hits “Pomple Haze,” “The Wind Poms Mary,” and “Hey Joe.” It was called “The album that shook the Pom world… leaving it forever changed.” He then released his album “Pomlectric Ladyland” and headlined the Pomstock Festival back in Pomerica. He experimented with electric sound and turned feedback and distortion into instruments. He blew away his peers, like The Rolling Poms, Pom McCartney, Eric Pomton, and P.P. King (Pom Pom King). They called him “Mr. Phenomenon.” He destroyed many guitars at the end of his performances, saying that they were sacrifices because he sacrificed the things he loved, and he loved his guitars. His performance of the “Star Spangled Banner” at Pomstock is considered by some to be the best rock performance of all time. (I didn’t make him a guitar because he destroys them all).
