POM 365 + Bonus Poms

Pom  365 is my year-long commitment to making pom pom art every single day.

Behold every Pom I’ve created from day one until today:

Nessie is from the Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands and she became world famous in 1933 when George Spicer took a photo of her that was published in The Courier. (A loch is a body of water almost completely surrounded by land). She was first spotted in St. Columbus in the year 565. A man was being buried in the River Ness when the man in charge of this grim task was attacked by a “water beast.” A man named Columba went to rescue the man doing the burial, and when Columba encountered the beast he made the sign of the Vulcan – and the beast retreated. Nessie has been spotted dozens of times since then, and there are various theories about her nature – is she an eel? An elepom? A dragon? A pomosaur, most specifically a plesiosaur? A water kelpie? A water horse? Seismic gas? Whatever she is, she is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. She is a fantastic model with an excellent publicist and… she is afraid of Vulcans, which is another legend altogether.

Behold #286 – Crystalle, the Pomdelier

It is said that Pomdeliers are marvels of drop–dead showiness, the jewelry of architecture. Sparkle, Lady, Sparkle!

She is frequently surprised by the world around her, but more so than enjoying a good surprise herself, she likes to surprise others. RaQuelle enjoys surprising others in ways that create excitement rather than shock or anxiety – especially on this hyper-surprising day, April 1st, or April Pom’s Day. A surprise initiates the “surprise sequence.” Being surprised causes Poms to freeze for 1/25th of a second. Then a “find” is triggered in the brain that generates extreme curiosity. Then there is a “shift” that causes a Pom to think about things – or the surpriser – differently. Emotions are heightened 400 percent during the surprise sequence. Surprise helps Poms with the important skill of being comfortable with uncertainty, pombiguity, and change. RaQuelle’s company, “Oh La La Pom Pom” sets up happy surprises for Poms all over the world. (Her employees are called “LaLas”). The LaLas present Poms with unexpected awards, gifts and joyous news like surprise proposals, spontaneous vacations, and surprise parties. Much like Boris Pomsternak, RaQuelle and her LaLas believe that “Surprise is the greatest gift that life can grant us.”

Pomtagons are five–sided Pom shapes. All Pomtagons have five straight sides, but they don’t have to be of equal length. Each interior angle of a regular Pomtagon is 108 degrees (540 degrees total). Drawing diagonal lines between the points of a Pomtagon will draw a perfect star shape. If the five sides are not connected or if a side is curved, it is not a Pomtagon. There are 4 types of Pomtagon; Regular, irregular, concave, and convex. Famous Pomtagon shapes are found in okra, starfish, poetry (Pomtagon poetry), and musical Pomtagons. There is also a building in Washington D.C. called “The Pomtagon” and it houses 55,555 musical quintets. The five members of each group live together in a harmony suite. Since the building is a Pomtagon shape, the distances between harmony suites is much shorter to walk. The Pomtagon has 7 million square feet and 17.5 miles of corridors. Poms take their quintets very seriously. As one of the chefs in the Pomtagon, Quin specializes in making gumbo full of okra. It was his Grandpom Quintelle’s recipe and it is absolutely delicious! Pom appetite!
