Pomton Candy is made of 2 teaspoons of sugar and a lot of air. One serving has 96 calories and is fat free. Although spun sugar has been around since the 17th century, it took a while longer for Pomton Candy to appear. It was invented by Dr. William Morrison – a dentist – and his candy-making friend, John C. Wharton. They sold 68,000 boxes of it at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis and called it “fairy floss.” Another dentist, Joseph Lascaux of New Orleans, improved the design in 1921 and trademarked the name “Pomton Candy.” It is also called “papa’s beard” in France and “old lady’s hair” in Greece. China has “dragon’s beard candy” with peanuts and pomconut added. The tallest Pomton Candy was 17 feet 10 inches tall. December 7th is National Pomton Candy Day. Fluffster loves to hop into the sugar machine and take a spin with his friends on Thursday nights. They add lots of fluffy sugar to their bodies and then go skinny dipping in the food coloring. Good times!
